He Waka Eke Noa

In the first weeks of the term, Room 9 worked together to compile their class treaty. We thought about the kind of learners we wanted to be and the classroom environment we wanted to create.
We used a waka as part of our treaty display to show that we are all members of the same team, working together as we progress on our learning journey.
He waka eke noa 😀

Taonga- koruru

In Inquiry, Room 9 have been learning about ‘taonga’.
In Maori culture, a taonga is an object or natural resource that is highly prized. We have also been discussing our ‘korero paki’, our stories or family history.
We used the symbol of the koruru to represent both of these concepts.

The koruru can be found at a marae. 
It is a carved head at the apex of the wharenui and represents ancestors.
In our Art lessons, we explored the lines, shapes and patterns made in the wooden carvings.
We used dye to paint the background and then drew the face and patterns of a koruru in black marker. Finally, we collage the eyes using wrapping paper with a paua shell design.

Research skills- Rata and the Waka

Today we are developing our questioning and research skills.



Task
After reading 'Rata and the Waka', create a question you would like answered about waka. 


Share your question with the class and sort into open or closed questions.
Find questions from other pairs that are similar to yours. How are they linked?
Identify the key words in your chosen question.
First search on kiddle.co to locate one possible resource that would support your research.
Now search on Google to try and find another resource that would help you answer your question.

All About Me

Room 9 have been learning about different word types. We listed some of our favourite words and sorted them into groups; nouns, adjectives and verbs.
Then to help us get to know each other a little better, we began to list words to describe ourselves, classifying each of the words that we used.
We used these words to write poems about ourselves.
Have a read of our published poetry and get to know Room 9 a little better too.
