The Hidden Treasure

We have been learning how to retell stories including specific details.
We read the story 'The Hidden Treasure'. We identified the key details and important words and events that need to be included in the retell.
We recorded our retells using the Puppet Pal app.

The Giant Chicken

Today Room 9's descriptive writing was inspired by a viral video about a giant chicken!
Take a look for yourself...

We worked with a buddy to mind map all the precise nouns, powerful verbs, specific adjectives and adverbs we could use in our descriptions.
We also drafted 'like' similes that would create a clear picture in the reader's mind.

The Tasman Tempest

Room 9 are learning about descriptive writing. 
We are exploring how to use precise verbs, adjectives, adverbs and similes to create a clear picture in the readers mind.
This week we decided to write about the heavy rain that hit Auckland over the weekend- The Tasman Tempest.

Here are some of our descriptions.

The Tasman Tempest by Leroy

Zap! ZZZZ! Thunder! My window was barricaded by the lashing rain. 
People were scuttling like hunted foxes. Cars drove as fast as peregrine falcons. I was terrified that some places were flooded. Drip, a raindrop slid like a little sea snake down my window.

The dark grey clouds flew above me. The lightning grumbled like a tiger trying to get me. The rain splatted on the road, the green grass, houses, people scuttled to their homes. The southerly winds blew across the country.

Elements of Art: Shape

Today in Art we talked about another element of artworks; shape.
We linked this to last week's lesson about line and explored how lines are connected to create shapes. 
We learned that some shapes in our environment are geometric and recognisable, like squares, circle and triangles. 
Other shapes are more free-form and are called organic.
We are working on developing our observational drawing skills.
We used some of our taonga as subjects for our practise sketches. 
We looked at the lines and shapes in the taonga and experimented with drawing these to make our drawings more realistic.

Samoan taonga- siapo

Today we read the chapter about Samoan tapa cloth in our shared text 'Fa'a Samoa'. 
Samoan tapa cloth is called siapo and is a Samoan taonga. 
We learned about how siapo is made. 
We explored the different shapes and symbols that can make a siapo design by looking at examples from other texts. 
We discussed how the designs can often be repeated symmetrical patterns.
We created our own siapo using brown sugar paper and pastel.

Fa'a Samoa- Ten Food Facts About Samoa

This week Room 9 are reading the non-fiction book 'Fa'a Samoa'.
Today we read the chapter 'Ten Food Facts about Samoa'.
Here are some of the facts we found out:
  • Samoans often eat with their hands- Vrushti
  • Oka is raw fish with coconut cream- Grayson
  • They have special dinners with their families on Sunday- Dylan
  • Palusami is taro cooked with coconut cream and wrapped in taro leaves- Tanisha
  • Samoan food can be cooked in an umu, wrapped in banana leaves. An umu is hot rocks on top of the ground used for cooking the food- Jack
  • They have a beef noodle dish like chop suey called sapasui- Isaac
  • In Samoa people grow their own vegetables and fruit in their gardens- Georgia

We then worked with a partner to research 5 food facts about a country of our choice. Here are some of the other food facts we learnt today:
  • French fries is the number one fast food in the Netherlands and is served with a variety of sauces- Georgia and Ashley
  • Rice was the first grain that people farmed in China- Vrushti and Caroline
  • A young Australian chemist known as Cyril Callister invented Vegemite- Jack
  • Red chilli, black pepper, capsicum and garam masala are some of the popular Indian spices. They are also used to make medicines- Janya, Tanisha and Krisha
  • Potatoes are the most popular food in Ireland- Jason
  • China is easily the world's largest producer of watermelon- Caroline and Vrushti
  • The great Aussie meat pie is a cultural icon- Dylan
  • According to Indian food theory, our food has 6 different flavours; sweet, salty, butter, sour, astringent (sharpy, really bitter) and spicy- Dhruvi, Anoushka and Shreya

Taonga

Room 9 have started to bring in their taonga to share with the class as part of their Inquiry learning this term.





Today we practised talking to our buddies about our taonga.
We used the following sentence starters to begin our presentations;

My taonga is...
It is _________ years old.
It is from...
It looks like...
It is a treasure because...
It is important to me/my family because...







We are going to continue practising our presentations, adding in more information and detail, in preparation for our taonga museum later in the term.

This week we will also use our taonga as a stimulus for writing descriptions and as a resource for developing our drawing skills in Art.

Sina and the Eel

Room 9 have been reading the book 'Sina and the Eel'.

In the book, the eel provides the people of Samoa with coconut trees to say sorry for his demanding behaviour. The people use the tree and its fruits to make fales, for weaving mats and baskets and for drinks and food.
Today we decided to work on our extended abstract thinking by trying to create other uses for the coconuts.

Here are some of our ideas:

I created a coconut vase- Anoushka
I created a boat out of the coconut husk and sails out of the leaves- Janya
I carved toys for children out of the coconut husk- Caroline
I designed a doll made out of the coconut shell and the hair is made out of the leaves- Vrushti
I created a coconut dress using the shell and weaving the leaves for a skirt. I also made drums out of the shells for dancing to- Advika
I made a coconut drink hat with a straw attached- Dylan
I built a water slide using the shells, trunk and leaves- Neelansh

Glow Worm Caves

On Friday, Room 9 took a virtual trip to the Waitomo glow worm caves.


 We talked with our partners about what we observed and chose different ways to express our ideas in writing.

The blue lightening was going around and around.

Dear Diary,
Today lots of people came to see me and my millions of crazy cousins. They thought we were sparkling melting ice cubes. After they took a closer look they couldn't stop observing our spiky zig-zaggy bodies! When it was almost misty midnight we lit up our star shaped wiggly bodies to guide them out of our sparkling cave.

We named different line styles we knew and explored drawing all the types we could think of.
